Claudia Pharis Weiss, group chair, has this report: "People who attended the January group meeting were very knowledgeable about the issues relating to retail development in SW. Discussion focused on attracting better stores, making the mall look better, the need for an anchor store, ways of getting people to go there, and the need to generate more of a pedestrian culture in SW. We discussed our need for information, previous studies and surveys that had been done on the matter, and the need to develop a consensus about what kind of mall we want. "There was general agreement about the value of focusing on the arts as a catalyst for retail development, and of setting as our goal, making SW a destination of choice for neighborhood and citywide shoppers. We talked about all the development that is planned for our area, and the importance of making sure that our neighborhood is connected to and benefits from this development. Recognizing the importance of taking action, we decided to work with the arts and culture action group and the SWNA to promote a summer music festival in SW that would tie the Mall to the Waterfront. We identified specific data that we need to begin to paint a cohesive picture of what's possible, toward the objective of engaging the community in articulating that grand retail development vision which we will all work together to accomplish." -Club #4 BB Metropolitan Police Boys & Girls Club #4 has several winning basketball teams nearing the end of the season. Here are a fewmore that are well worth visiting. When you hear "Shakespeare Theater" in Washington , the assumption is that the name refers to the big new theater on Seventh St. N.W. However, there is another Shakespeare theater that performs imaginative, daring works that the larger, more sedate companies will not try: Washington Shakespeare Company on South Clarke Street in Arlington a short walk from the Crystal City Metro Station, with ample off-street parking nearby. "As you Like It" opens on March 30 and promises to be an unusual take on this Shakespeare classic. Jennifer Nelson, artistic director of the African Continuum Theater Company, will direct it. Call 703-418-4808. Two other theaters that deserve attention are Studio and Wooly Mammoth. Both theaters open new productions in March. Wooly Mammoth (202-393-3939) is showing "Bug", which is described as a deceptive, quirky play about paranoia in a conspiracy-filled, X-Files world. Sounds intriguing. Studio Theater (202-332-3300) is offering "Bash", a trio of one-act plays by Neil LaBute, creator of the controversial movie, "In the Company of Men." These plays examine hypocrisy and human cruelty in modern American morality. Both theaters have attended parking lots. They can also be reached by METRO and bus. P.S.: Arena Stage has announced that the very popular actress Phylicia Rashad will join the cast of the play "Blue" to be performed in the Kreeger April 14 through June 4. Ms. Rashad is remembered for her previous performances at Arena and for her starring roles on the "Cosby Show" and the CBS sitcom "Cosby." -Denny Cruz, S.W. Artist The lobby of Town Square Towers was the site of the first showing of The Cruz Collection, original acrylic paintings and pencil drawings by the local artist Denny Cruz, a resident of Southwest, D.C. The artist, a native of Puerto Rico, paints with the bright, fanciful hues of his homeland. His subjects are often reminiscent of the people, architecture, landscape, and wildlife of the island. The showing was sponsored by the Friends of Town Square Towers during the December holidays. Guests were asked to bring a toy to be donated to the Southwest Community House for distribution to local children. Denny Cruz's works are available for viewing by appointment only. (202-484-3186). -Buy A Ticket, Get One Free Youth under 17 can get a free ticket to "Blue" at Arena Stage during the first week of its run (Apr. 19-23) when an adult ticket is purchased, as part of an effort by 30 area theaters to introduce younger audiences to the stage. ARTS PAGE (captions) Jae Duncan, Southwest resident, brings down the house with her singing at Friday Night Jazz at Westminster Church. -Cherry Blossom Concert Apr. 5 The chamber music of Handel, Schubert, Saint-Saens and Weber will be featured on Wednesday, Apr. 5, at 7:30 pm at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 6th and Maine Ave. S.W. as part of the Cherry Blossom Festival. Performers will include Rosmarie Ruiz Houghton, soprano; Wendy Hodge, oboe; Jerry Schwarz, clarinet; Linda Bryant, flute; Susan Wilson, bassoon; and David Ehrlich, piano. Concerts by the Southwest Chamber Music Players, an association of amateur musicians based in Southwest, are free, although donations are requested. -"Adopt-A-Book"© At Reprint Book Shop, a la Oprah Customers of Reprint Book Shop in L'Enfant Plaza shopping mall are picking their favorite books, telling the book store of their choices, and reaping a one dollar store credit for each copy of the book sold in three months. The store says, "Oprah Winfrey has created a flurry" by selecting a title for her TV book club. "Our customers could do an equally fine job of promoting their favorite books. So, we've developed the Adopt-A-Book© program, where you get to wield the power of Oprah." Customers can fill out the index card supplied by the store, talk up their choice with their friends, and the store will promote the book and report on sales after three months. The store puts a few restrictions on this "experiment in promoting good books." Such popular "mega-selling authors as Grisham, Clancy, and Vanzant, who don't need your help or ours to sell their books," are "unadoptable." "All of Oprah's previous selections are unadoptable; however, if she picks a book that you have adopted, congratulations." -City At Peace Returns Mar. 23, At Howard U. "City at Peace" will premier a new musical written and performed by youth at Howard University's Crampton Auditorium, Thurs. Mar. 23, at 7:30 p.m. The popular youth program, which has performed at Arena Stage the past two years, will be at Arena with four performances in July.
