(March 1980, p. 8)
The December, 1993, issue of The Southwester has a front page story entitled "Citizen of the Month" on the occasion of Mrs. Brewer moving from Southwest to a home of her own in Hillcrest Heights near Pennsylvania Ave. S.E. and Alabama Ave. It mentions her activities as a health worker with Southwest Community House, with the Tri-School PTA for Syphax, Amidon and Bowen Elementary Schools, with the Randall Marine Science and Aeronautics High School effort, her active membership in St. Matthews Lutheran Church, and her success in raising four daughters and four sons.

Arena Keeps Its Stages Busy
With its 50th Anniversary season half way through, Arena Stage is keeping its two main stages busy and frequent performances at the Old Vat downstairs.
"Tom Walker" is now running through March 4. "Coyote Builds North America," a play to be directed by Artistic Director Molly Smith, runs from Mar. 2 through April 15. She directed that play a few years ago at Perseverance Theatre in Alaska.
A five week run of Tennessee Williams "Streetcar Named Desire" begins March 30 and runs till May 6. The final performance will be "Constance Star," on the life of Ida B. Wells, playing May 4 through July 1. It is written by and will be directed by Tazewell Thompson.
Arena Cast Donates To Law Center
The Arena Stage cast for "The Great White Hope" made a contribution to the anti-racism group The Southern Poverty Law Center instead of exchanging opening night gifts.
The theme of Howard Sacklers play is American race relations. Terrence Currier, a member of the cast, urged the donation instead of an exchange of gifts because "I cant think of a more appropriate expression of our collective voice in the fight against bigotry, intolerance and racism."

Washington Interfaith Network
Progress comes slowly, but W.I.N. the Washington Interfaith Network of about 50 religious and labor groups, including S.W. churches, sees progress in such efforts as building affordable housing, starting after-school programs and getting repairs to school buildings.
W.I.N. was most visible during the 1998 Mayoral election, when 60,000 copies of the responses of candidates to W.I.N.s list of important issues were distributed.
Since then W.I.N. continues to emphasize grass-roots citizen organizing and to work closely with the Mayor, the School Superintendent and others to monitor progress on its goals.
W.I.N. leaders and parents conducted audits of 35 schools, listing repairs needed.
Superintendent Vance has committed to making the repairs.
Ground has been broken on the first 147 units of affordable housing at Ft. Dupont. The Mayors scorecard claims success on starting 1,000 new housing units, rehabilitating 1,000
units and demolishing 500 units. W.I.N.s goal is 1,000 units of affordable housing.
W.I.N.s goal of after school programs for every child will require $30 million of dedicated funds. WIN has helped get 4 programs up and running.
