Transportation Access


Planes, trains or automobile -- whatever your mode of transportation, Southwest Waterfront and Capitol Riverfront are easily accessible by any means in or out!

Our neighborhood is wonderfully located along major highways, ideally embedded with key subway stops, and tied together with great bus routes. Visitors can travel easily to our city and neighborhood from either the train station or airport -- both on subway lines that bring you to our front doors.

Area Airport
  • Washington Reagan National Airport is just a hop skip across the 14th Street Bridge (I-395 South) to exit 10-C onto George Washington Parkway South to Airport exit. Hosting 13 airlines with taxi stands and ample short- and long-term parking and accessible by subway on the Blue/Yellow Line at Ronald Reagan Washington National Aiport stop.
  • There are two other airports that travelers can fly into -- Dulles International Airport and BW Internatioanl Aiport -- serviced by 5A Dulles-L'Enfant Plaza and B30 BWI-Greenbelt bus routes respectively via the Green Line.
Automobile
With a number of highways and arterial roads crossing through Southwest and near-Southeast, our neighborhood is easy to get to and through:
  • I-395: Heading north from Virginia (transversing north of Southwest and near-Southeast neighborhood) at the Francis Case Bridge becoming the SW-SE Freeway with exits to Southwest and near-Southeast at:
    • Exit 4 - Main Ave., SW Waterfront and Nationals Park
    • Ext 6 - C Street, SW; US Capitol and The House
    • Exit to South Capitol Street
    • Exit to 6th Street, SE, Nationals Park and Navy Yard
    Heading south to Viriginia from the Pennsylvania Ave., SE/295 interchange driving on 395 South there are exits at:
    • 8th Street, SE
    • 6th and 7th Streets, SW
    • 12th Street exit is closed due to road construction
    • Maine Avenue exit leads in the direction of the Tidal Basin with no intersection or road existing into SW.
  • I-295: Although technically beginning at the Capitol Beltway (I-95/I-495) a pair of mainline ramps coonects to the southern terminus of the route to the nearby MD 210 conitnuing north from this interchange, I-295 enters the District of Columbia knows as the Anacostia Freeway:
    • Heading north from Maryland (transversing north from I-95/I-495 Capitol Beltway Interchange) towards Washington, DC exit at the South Capitol Street/Suitland Parkway exit bearing towards the South Capitol Street bridge and continue over the bridge that enters in SW to the left and SE to the right
    Heading south towards Washington, DC from Maryland off of BW Parkway or Route 50 (Keniworth Avenue):
    • Passing Pennsylvania Avenue exit towards the Howard Road; take Howard Road exit and turn right at end of ramp following through in left or center lanes taking you over the South Capitol Street Bridge to SW/SE
  • South Capitol Street: Running north to south from the U.S. Capitol across the Frederick Douglass Bridge (South Capitol Street Bridge) pass the Nationals Park across the Anacostia River
  • 7th Street/Georgia Avenue: One of the few corridors that runs completely through the city -- north to south, 7th Street enters into Southwest after passing the National Mall, veering right at I Street, SW and ending at Maine Avenue.
  • Maine Avenue/M Street: Starting near the Tidal Basin from north-northwest to a south-southeasterly direction towards the waterfront merging into M Street, SW at 6th Street heading east into near-Southeast to the 11th Street Bridge traveling approximately 25 blocks.
Bus/Circulator
There's no reason you can't get connected to Southwest and near-Southeast with multiple bus routes transversing through the neighborhood:
    DC Circulator -
    The DC Circulator is a premium bus system linking the city's cultural, entertainment and business destinations. Its buses – featuring low floors, big windows, and multiple doors for easy on-and-off service – are unlike any other transportation system in the area. The Circulator, with its $1.00 fare, promotes ease of movement, encourages transit use and enhances existing public transportation systems, while also helping to reduce congestion and air pollution. The DC Cirulator is the product of a unique public/private partnership between the District Department of Transportation, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, and DC Surface Transit, Inc.

Train
  • AMTRAK - As the nation's intercity passenger rail operator, Amtrak connects America in safer, greener and healthier ways. With 21,000 route miles in 46 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian provinces, Amtrak operates more than 300 trains each day. Located on Columbus Circle at 50 Massachusetts Ave., NE, Union Station there are a number of ways to access it -- Circulator is accessble by the Red Line subway and transfer to the Green Line to either Waterfront-SEU or Navy Yard. Taxi stands are right out front and hosts a wonderful eatery and shops to visit just before you depart the city or upon your arrival.
  • MARC - The MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) Train Service is a commuter rail system whose service areas include Harford County, Maryland; Baltimore City; Washington D.C.; Brunswick, Maryland; Frederick, Maryland and Martinsburg, and West Virginia. The MARC train services operate on Monday through Friday ONLY.
  • VRE - The Virginia Railway Express is a commuter rail service that operates Monday through Friday, from the Northern Virginia suburbs to Washington D.C. with station stop in Southwest at L'Enfant Plaza. VRE primarily travel northbound in the morning, towards Washington, and southbound during the evening, towards Manassas (along I-66), and Fredericksburg (along I-95).

Water Taxi Service
American River Taxi is working on plans to offer regularly scheduled runs and eco-friendly water taxis between Teague, the Gangplank Marina on the Southwest Waterfront, Washington Harbor in Georgetown, and Alexandria, with shuttle connections to the Foggy Bottom and L'Enfant Plaza Metro stations from Georgetown and Southwest. There may be possible future service to National Harbor, Poplar Point and National Airport. The company's owner, Shaun Guevarra, says that there are plans to eventually offer discounted service to residents of Southeast and Southwest, along with rechargeable account cards and mobile payment options.
