River Park Friends
River Park Friends is an organization formed to enhance, promote,
support and supplement community development,
educational, and charitable activities in Southwest
Washington D.C. by raising and distributing tax exempt
monies for the betterment of Southwest
Washington, D.C. Our three mission categories are:
- Community Development: to enhance the
neighborhood’s physical environment,
beauty, and public safety;
- Educational: including scholarships for
deserving youth, education and
information about the cooperative housing
movement, and support for studies of and
education about the Southwest Washington
D.C. neighborhood and its history;
- Charitable: support for senior residents,
such as home health care, homemaker and
shopping services.
River Park Friends is a private, non-profit tax-exempt
501(c)(3) independent organization not affiliated with River
Park Mutual Homes, Inc.

The board of River Park Friends consists of six
members of River Park Mutual Homes, Inc.
There are also three at-large residents of
Southwest Washington D.C. The board of
River Park Friends manages the internal affairs
of the organization, including decisions about
distribution of income. There were 26 Founding
Members in 1998. All Board members are volunteers and
administrative costs are kept to a minimum.
What is the Legal Status of River Park Friends?
River Park Friends was incorporated in the
District of Columbia on August 27, 1998 and in
2003 received permanent tax-exempt status
from the Internal Revenue Service as a 501 (c)
(3) organization. Donations to River Park
Friends have always been tax-exempt.
Criteria for Funding
- Community development, educational,
or charitable projects in Southwest D.C.
- Nonsectarian, non-profit organization
- Supplements other funding
How is River Park Friends different from other organizations?
River Park Friends does not conduct programs,
but provides funds to supplement activities in
Southwest Washington, D.C. Contributing to
River Park Friends provides a sense of
partnership and identity for both contributors
and recipients.
Types of Donations
Donations of any amount are welcome. Persons
or organizations are encouraged to maintain
membership by making a regular annual
donation.
Individuals may want to indicate in their will
the desire to leave a certain portion of their
estate to River Park Friends. Donors may want
to donate in memory of a friend or relative.
Donors will receive confirmation of donations.
What are the benefits of membership in River Park Friends?
River Park Friends gives donors a tax deductible
opportunity to enhance the quality
of life in Southwest, D.C. All donors to River
Park Friends become members of the
corporation. All members of the corporation
are eligible to vote for officers, to become
involved in setting priorities for use of the
resources, and to attend the annual meetings.
