Members
of River Park Mutual Homes, Inc. established the River
Park Friends and will administer it. River Park Friends
is independent of River Park Mutual Homes, Inc., a Southwest
D.C. housing cooperative.
The
Board of River Park Friends consists of five members
of River Park Mutual Homes, Inc. There are also two
at-large residents of Southwest Washington D.C. The
Board of River Park Friends manages the internal affairs
of the organization, including decisions about distribution
of income. An Advisory Committee, consisting of people
involved in the Southwest Washington community, has
been established to assist in determination of needs
and priorities for use of funds.
All
Board members are volunteers and receive compensation
for out-of-pocket expenses only. Administrative costs
(mailings, Post Office box, bank account, telephone,
supplies, legal services, insurance, etc.) are kept
to a minimum.
WHAT
IS THE LEGAL STATUS OF RIVER PARK FRIENDS?
River
Park Friends was incorporated in the District of Columbia
on August 27, 1998 and has received a tax-exempt ruling
from the Internal Revenue Service as a 501 (c) (3) organization.
Donations to River Park Friends are tax-exempt for purposes
of income tax.
HOW
IS RIVER PARK FRIENDS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER ORGANIZATIONS?
River
Park Friends will not conduct programs, but will provide
funds to supplement activities in Southwest Washington,
D.C. Contributing to River Park Friends will provide
a sense of partnership and identity for both contributors
and recipients.
WHAT
IS NEEDED NOW?
Funding is needed to supplement the amounts donated
during the initial fund drive in 1998. These funds will
provide the basis to identify appropriate projects and
begin to support them.
TYPES
OF DONATIONS
Donations
of any amount are welcome. Persons or organizations
are encouraged to to maintain membership by making a
regular annual donation. Individuals may want to indicate
in their will the desire to leave a certain portion
of their estate to River Park Friends. Donors may specify
a particular project or program or may donate in memory
of a friend or relative. Donors will receive confirmation
of donations.
River
Park Friends cannot accept property, household items,
paintings, and similar tangible goods. Proceeds of the
sale of these types of items will be accepted.
WHAT
ARE THE BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP IN RIVER PARK FRIENDS?
River Park Friends gives donors a tax-deductible opportunity
to enhance the quality of life in Southwest, D.C. All
donors to River Park Friends become members of the corporation.
All members of the corporation are eligible to vote
for officers, to become involved in setting priorities
for use of the resources, and to attend the annual meetings.

Park Friends is organized to enhance, promote, support
and supplement community development, educational, and
charitable activities in Southwest Washington D.C. by
raising and distributing tax-exempt monies for the betterment
of Southwest Washington, D.C. Specific examples include:
- Community
Development: to enhance the neighborhoods physical
environment, beauty, and public safety;

Educational: including scholarships for deserving
youth, education and information about the cooperative
housing movement, and support for studies of and education
about the Southwest Washington D.C. neighborhood and
its history;

Charitable: support for senior residents, such as
home health care, homemaker and shopping services.
