Studies & Projects Affecting Southwest, DC

Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC)
Tis a government-sponsored enterprise of the District of Columbia established in 2004 to lead the revitalization of lands along the Anacostia River and coordinate environmental and programming initiatives that promote river clean up, public awareness, and enjoyment of the river.

The AWC will work with the community, government and business partners to design and implement plans to clean the river and its shores, create streets and transit lines that open the river to the public and develop cultural destinations that will enrich the lives of DC residents and visitors alike. As the riverfront blossoms, it will create economic opportunities and the AWC will ensure that current residents share in these opportunities. For more information, see

L'Enfant Promenade Urban Planning Study General/Tourist Information
The District Department of Transportation in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, the National Park Service and the Washington Interdependence Council, is pursuing an urban planning study to identify and evaluate rehabilitation options and modifications to the existing roadway and sidealks for the L'Enfant Promenade, located in Southwest DC. L'Enfant Promenade runs from Independence Avenue to Water Street, linking the Mall to the Southwest Waterfront. The study is investigating ways to improve connections in the area and to the Southwest waterfront. This study will be followed with an environmental assessment. Study details are at ddot.dc.gov

South Capitol Street Corridor Study
DDOT is conducting a study of methods to make improvements to promote commercial, recreational and residential activities and to improve pedestrian and vehicular access on South Capitol Street and the Frederick Douglass Bridge between Independence Avenue and the Suitland Parkway, and on New Jersey Avenue between Independence Avenue and M Street Southeast. Information is at ddot.dc.gov

Fourth Street SW Transportation Study
The District of Columbia Department Transportation (DDOT) is conducting a study that evaluates the potential impacts of proposed redevelopment at Waterside Mall. The study area is located in Southwest Washington, DC, and includes 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, G, I and M Streets surrounding Waterside Mall. Because of improved levels of service, reduced delay and queue lengths, and reduced traffic on local residential streets, the Study Team recommends that 4th Street be connected between I and M Streets and that this connection be made available to vehicles. This report summarizes recommended mitigation measures for existing conditions and includes some preliminary recommendations for future conditions. In the next, final phase of the study, the Study Team will develop additional recommendations to mitigate the effects of future development on transportation operations in the study area. The report can be found on DDOT's Web-site at ddot.dc.gov
